Behind The Pine Curtain

East Texas is a long swath of land that extends from the Red River to the North to the Galveston Bay to the Southeast. A vast portion of it is covered by a coniferous forest commonly known as the Texas Piney Woods or the Pine Curtain.

This coniferous forest is dominated by several species of pine as well as hardwoods including hickory and oak.  The densest part of it has been dramatically reduced by the lumber industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Worldwide Fund for Nature considers the Piney Woods to be one of the most endangered ecosystems in the United States, although some portions of it are now protected by national and state parks.

The region is also known for a myriad of beautiful lakes, where life flows bucolically slow and one can witness some of the most gorgeous sunsets.

This is just a very unpretentious series of photographs I manage to capture during the years I lived in the area, between 2012 and 2019. These are not professional photos by all means. Most of them I just took casually as I rode my bike or hiked in the area.
